Competitor Analysis

Competitor Analysis

Before I started with any design work, I had a look at competitors to understand their approach to the same audience. I chose Bboxx and Arc Power, as these companies are the direct competitors to Kaboni.

Key Takeaways

Bboxx

Bboxx supplies in-house mini-grids to developing countries, trying to end energy poverty. The website has a light, modern look but suffers from too much content per page.

Arc Power

Arc Power is supplying off-the-shelf mini-grids to developing countries. Compared to Bboxx, it is a lot more people and community-focused and less commercial and high-tech. High cognitive load due to many CTA’s and very colourful interface

Previous Design

Previous Design

  • The logo and top navigation bar take up a lot of space that could have been used for a hero section with a big image and a CTA

  • No CTA in the hero section slows down the click-through-rate

  • The lacking hierarchy of the header, due to its similar size to a paragraph, makes it hard to differentiate

  • Big blocks of text make it hard for users to find important keywords and are unlikely to read everything

  • First CTA halfway down the page, missing opportunities to guide visitors to other pages

  • The picture does not showcase their product or projects

  • The search bar at the bottom of the screen instead of the top makes for an unfamiliar experience

My Approach

My Approach

  • Focus on the project and the people of Burundi

  • Use Imagery to deepen users' understanding of the project and make them feel part of the community

  • Use more white space to make the website feel light and professional

  • Use appropriate colours and typography

Colours and Typgraphy

Colours and Typgraphy

The complimentary colours are based on the logo color. One complimentary color and earthy tones give the site a calm and close-to-nature feel.

Green is a very down-to-earth color. It can represent new beginnings and growth. It also signifies renewal and abundance.

What I have learned

Although this was not my first website build, it was my first website redesign.

I have learned how to use existing brand identities and resources to start off my design. This was a blessing and a curse at the same time, as I had a clear direction my client wanted to head in but not being completely free in my decisions was a first for me.

Another thing was setting up the host and making the website go live.

As Kaboni wanted to use a host, powered by green energy and wanted to avoid using a google service, I could not host the embedded videos with youtube but with the host of the website itself.

Doing it for the first time proved to be a challenge for me but now I am happy about this experience and feel more confident than ever about web hosting.
